Renate Lohmann is a children's illustrator with strong ties to tradition, painting in watercolor and egg tempera for clients like Highlights, American Girl and NOVA.
I love her soft style and wanted to make a site that she would feel comfortable representing her work. She had a layout in mind, so I used a very plain template and customized from there.
I morphed a weebly theme (click Read More, below) that had the logo, navigation, and site content areas in the relative positions I wanted for the site. Then I worked on it from there. While the original theme itself was rather nice, it would have distracted from the artwork — and that's something one doesn't do with a portfolio site.
Because Susan's illustration and fine art styles are quite different from each other, I had to find a way to tie them together. One of Weebly's headline fonts Weebly looked very "Susan-y" to me and I realized it was close to Susan's signature — classy, readable and clean. Problem solved.
I'd chosen a soft olive-y green background color, but Susan asked for a brighter green that I would never have tried. The combination between a script and bright color is unexpected, so the resulting look is memorable and fresh — and it goes great with both her children's illustration and fine art.
