Picture Book redesign using existing illustrations and edited text for Print-On-Demand (POD) Authors: Katherine Zwers, John Tobin Illustrator: Carol Heyer The original book was published when digital page layout and Photoshop were in their infancy. Rights had reverted to the author, who wanted to revise the text and re-design the book to publish as a POD softcover. I will also be re-designing the companion book, Sebastian and Hopscotch's Golden Easter Egg. |
Re-designed spreads Typographic elements were used to add a playful look to the pages and additional illustrations were created from existing artwork with Photoshop. Click to go to Sebastian and Hopscotch's site.

Author: D. August Baertlein Illustration: Siri Weber Feeney Alternate cover designs, below We considered depicting three faces, since the novel is told in three voices, or to show the main protagonist, Jake, with his brain-damaged twin brother. While either of these would have sufficed, we felt that the single skeptical, vulnerable (and reworked) face of Jake would be the most compelling. It would also show up best when viewed as a thumbnail image online. Once the cover illustration was done, the final choices were the positioning of Jake's face, the appearance of the headline/byline, and whether or not to include the implants Jake undergoes in an attempt to rescue his twin. I designed the cover first for an eBook, since we decided that if it's compelling and readable as a small image online, it will show up across the room as a print book. Luckily, I did the cover file in high resolution at the size of a regular book cover, because we are preparing the book for POD publishing right now. Oh my, this was a great surprise. Without telling me beforehand (so I couldn't go all nervous and beg to back out) D. August Baertlein submitted our cover for Joel Friedlander's December Fiction eBook Cover Design Award and we won! Hoo-ee! Thank you, Dawn! Thank you Joel!
