I'm happy but not surprised to say that SYNAPSE author, D. August Baertlein, is one of 50 semifinalists in the Young Adult category of Amazon's Breakthrough Novel Award. That's 50 out of 5,000 nationally.

This last week, I completed my first repeating pattern! It's for the background of a customized weebly website for Maggie Kendis, a fine artist who does individually hand-painted linoleum block prints.

I was talking with the artists in my illustrators' group run by Carol Heyer, telling them about a $400 program I'd found that helped with constructing repeat patterns. (Because I was worried I'd need it). Kat McDonough said something like, "It's easier than you think. Try it."

So I did. And it was.

This YouTube video was really helpful.

This isn't the full repeat, but it's enough to get the feel for the pattern. I used Maggie's signature from one of her prints and kept the pattern colors very subtle, so they didn't interfere with the important stuff on the website — her artwork!

We've received the proof for the printed version of Synapse and I'm pretty darned happy! (Okay, I'm thrilled!)

The cover was tricky, because the recommendations for successful POD (Print On Demand) printing say to avoid dark colors and heavy ink coverage. Take a look at the design and you'll see the challenge . . ..

But everything — the skin tones, text placement on the spine and front and back covers, the rich black background and cover lamination — all came out beautifully.

I was lucky to get to do the cover illustration as well as its design, but D. August has done the real work — excellent writing. She's a longtime member of my online writing group and even her first draft blew me away with spot-on voices of three very different, very realistic main characters.

I've been re-designing a picture book that was published when digital page layout and Photoshop were in their infancy. Rights had reverted to the author, who wanted to revise the text and re-design the book to publish as a POD softcover.

Since this book is based on licensed characters, the cover design was made to be part of a series. Click here to see more of the re-design.

Sebastian and Hopscotch's Christmas Star will be available for purchase soon. I'll post again as the books become available.
